Talk of Europe Creative Camp

On last October 7th and 8th CEDAR joined the Talk of Europe Creative Camp, in the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid (NISV) in Hilversum. Talk of Europe is a CLARIN project between the VU University Amsterdam, DANS, the Erasmus University Rotterdam and NISV to achieve three goals: 1) translate the European Parliament proceedings into CLARIN standards; 2) to explore how linked data can be exploited by humanities scholars; and 3) to create tools for scholars to analyse linked datasets.… (continue reading)

Digital Humanities Benelux Conference – Report


On June 12-13 I attended the very First Digital Humanities Benelux Conference (#DHBenelux) in The Hague, organised in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek / Huygens ING. The response from the audience was great in terms of attendance: about 200 attendees showed up, while the most optimistic previsions were hoping for 60-70, which clearly speaks in favour of the growth of the community.… (continue reading)

Linkathon at the VU

During last April 2, CEDAR participated in the great 1st VU Digital History Datathon (notice the difference with a hackathon). The goal of the day was to sit together with the many people applying Linked Data principles to historical datasets at the VU and its sorroundings, in order to:


  • Get a clear picture of the different datasets, and the way they may be linked
  • Produce as many  links between these datasets as possible

Harmonization efforts


Harmonization is a fundamental task in CEDAR to improve census data quality and comparability. A first release (r1) of harmonized census data is available at the SPARQL endpoint

under the graph group <>.

CEDAR Harmonize, hands-on session


The 507 census tables contain several dimensions, which correspond to the column and row headers with the properties (gender, marital status, etc.) that the census numbers describe. These dimensions, though, are not coherent between datasets: they can be named differently, and even be defined in non-comparable ranges.… (continue reading)

Visiting Intersect Australia — Recap

Another appointment of CEDAR in Sydney was to meet Ingrid Mason and Anne Cregan at Intersect Australia. Intersect is Australia’s largest full-service eResearch support agency.

One project at Intersect is the Humanities Network Infrastructure (HuNI). The project aims at bringing together multiple humanities datasets, extracting structured information from them and increasing their linkage and accessibility.… (continue reading)
